In live recordings of court proceedings (a form of media transcription), the traditional stenotype machine used in court proceeding transcription is linked to computers for real-time captioning (as when trials are televised). The spoken word appears on the screen as the court reporter keys in the symbols on the stenotype machine.

Real time transcription combines the transcription accuracy of human court reporters with cutting-edge technology, resulting in interactive deposition transcripts, legal interview transcripts etc. Lawyers are thus able to view testimonies almost immediately after they are given (deposition transcriptions, for example) and to mark sections for later use, or to make annotations. Since real time transcriptions can be sent securely over the internet, those unable to attend an event can still participate in the proceedings.

Real time transcription is not used only for legal transcription. It is often used in media transcription (live broadcasts), where it is referred to as “closed-captioning’.
